UPS sizing : How to determine the power

By UPS sizing, we mean determining the power needed to protect the devices connected to a UPS. To determine the maximum power that can be supplied by a UPS, it is essential to understand which devices will be connected and what power each will consume.

Sizing of a UPS

First, it is crucial to determine the maximum power consumption of the connected devices. If you have the device’s power value in watts (W), you need to convert it into volt-amperes (VA) with a simple mathematical calculation. For example, a PC with a monitor consumes about 250 watts. To convert this value into VA, simply divide it by 0.7:

250W / 0.7 = 357 VA

Once this calculation is done, follow these steps:

  1. Make a list of all the devices that need protection from the UPS, including servers, monitors, and other peripherals.
  2. Multiply the voltage (V) of each device by its amperage (A) to obtain the power required by each device in volt-amperes (VA), and sum the VA of all the devices to be protected.
  3. The result will correspond to the maximum power your UPS will need.

On average, a computer consumes about 250W, a modem 50W, and a printer between 80W and 150W.

Why a UPS?

Most company downtime and damage to IT systems are due to voltage drops, power surges, and blackouts. To ensure the correct operation of local and remote systems, it is necessary to have reliable protection against all electrical disturbances. Online and line-interactive UPS systems are the ideal solutions to overcome these issues. Below, we showcase some of the best UPS options in the AEC range::
